How to Induce Lucid Dreaming?: Alas!! Was experiencing the best dream of my life. Was going on a cruise in Hawaii, why did I have to wake up? That’s the most common reaction whenever we arise from those sweet dreams. Have you ever wondered; how to control my dreams tonight? Is it all possible? Well, it is very possible. In order to control our dreams, we must first know that we are dreaming, and that is what’s called lucid dreaming. All our memories are either stored in the “long-term memory” section or in the “short-term” one, in our brains.

When we recall any memories, they are temporarily stored in the “short-term memory section”.

A dream is just our brain making random stories with them.

It is not easy to describe dreams here.

Everybody dreams, even those who are blind, though they can only dream about their emotions and senses like feeling someone’s touch or hearing, the main point is that all these dreams are mostly just decided by our brains.

What if I told you that you can control your dreams like they do in the movie “Inception”, OK maybe dream within a dream within a dream is kind of impossible but still, wouldn’t that be cool?

It’s the dream that you can control and in which you know that you are dreaming and is termed as Lucid-dreaming.

So what is lucid dreaming?

It’s the dream that you can control and in which you know that you are dreaming.

Dreams have triggering points in them which can tell us that we are dreaming but we need to have an intense focus for that, sometimes it’s easy too, I mean in my first Lucid dream ever I was walking somewhere, unaware of whether it was a dream or a reality, and I saw my Grandfather, and all of a sudden it occurred to me “how is that possible?

My grandfather died 5 years ago”, and so I realized that I was dreaming, and then all of that vanished away

I guess I just got really excited when I first had my lucid dream.

Everybody does.

Anyhow, I have mastered Lucid Dreaming and it’s been almost 5 years now since I am doing it and it’s simply awesome.

I mean the feeling alone, that you get when you realize that you can do anything you want and without any consequences, is just awesome and that is why I’m writing this article.

I want you to experience Lucid dreaming too. It’s going to take some time, but it’s nothing that you can’t manage, just some work, and it’s going to be totally worth it.

Start writing down your dreams:

People forget their dreams as soon as they wake up, almost 90% of the time and it is really frustrating at time. So the first and the most important step is to practice to remember your dreams and understand your subconscious because what’s the point if you forget your dream, even if it was the Lucid-dreaming in the first place.

Now the question is: How to remember your dreams, well the easiest way to do this is to keep a notebook and a pen nearby on your bed so that you can note down every single detail you remember about your dreams, before you forget, in that book, as soon as you wake up in your REM cycle (explained in the third step).

Now it’s all about remembering your dreams, so don’t worry about spelling mistakes or punctuation, just write it down or even sketch it, if you don’t want to write, like making a landscape you were on in that specific dream, any symbol or any sign.

Make sure to write/sketch as fast as you can because we forget dreams surprisingly very quickly.

Also, try to write your dreams in the present tense because it will help you to experience your dream better when you read it later on.

Ask yourself “Am I in a dream?”

Are you dreaming right now? The reality check is what will help you answer this.

The thing is you are unaware of whether you are dreaming or in a reality. It happens because both of these worlds are very similar and hard to be distinguished.

So what you can do is to perform series of reality checks throughout your day, every day.

That way you will be in a habit to do it regularly and so the chance of you doing it in the dream will increase.

Now there are many ways to perform reality checks.

  • You may try to poke your index finger into your palm.
  • Look at your watch two times in a row.
  • Pick up a book and read the same sentence two times.

If you are dreaming:

  • Your finger will pass through your palm
  • The time will be different every time you will look at your watch.
  • The sentences you’d read off book would also be different every time.

Similarly, there are many other reality checks that you can perform like Leonardo DiCaprio did with the totem in the movie Inception. My favorite one is the palm reality check though but it doesn’t matter whichever the “reality checker” you choose, the most important thing is to actually believe that you may be dreaming.

Now I will be honest with you, at first, it seemed just stupid of me, trying to put my finger through the palm like 5 times in a day.

I used to do it every time with a full belief that it will pass through and then one day it did, and I realized I was dreaming. Took me a while though.

Wake up in REM period of sleep cycle:

Dreams occur in our REM (Rapid Eye Movement) period of sleep.

There are basically 5 Stages of sleep and REM is the 5th one.

Stage 1 takes about 10 minutes to complete and stage 2 lasts for about 15 minutes.

Similarly, stage 3 takes almost 25 minutes and stage 4 takes about 45 minutes.

And stage 5, the REM stage only takes 10 minutes to complete, after it the cycle starts all over again.

You dream in REM cycle only so it doesn’t matter if you can’t lucid dream for now. Just start trying to wake in 5th stage and write down the dream as soon as you wake up.

Now how to wake up in the REM cycle is the big question here.

What you can do to achieve this is that you can wake up during your sleep at any time. Set the alarm to ring out after exactly 95 minutes, depending on the time you take to sleep. So that you can wake up again in your REM cycle.

Also since you already know the time of each stage. You can now try to wake up in your REM sleep more than once.

What I do to achieve lucid-dreaming, is that I wake up at 5 am, and by waking up.  I set my alarm to ring after exactly 1 h 40 mins that’s 100 minutes. So my alarm rings out at exactly during my REM sleep (It takes me almost 10 minutes to sleep).

At first, it was very tough, but I kept on practicing until I started to understand my sleep pattern. The reading which I showed you may vary, but if you keep at it you will find the exact time.

These summarized steps can make you achieve lucid-dreaming:

1-Find out how long it takes you to go to sleep. Also, figure out how much time it takes you to reach 5th stage. Then try to wake up in you REM stage by setting up the alarm accordingly.

2-Write down all the detail you remember about your dream, as soon as you wake up from your REM stage.

3-Perform reality checks throughout your day.

There are a lot of reality checks that you can perform. But you need to believe that you are part of a dream.

It’s a little work, but trust me it’s totally worth it.
